Lash mapping
When working on a set of lash extensions, the adhesive that holds everything together is crucial. When the glue performs as expected, the application process runs smoothly. However, if the glue develops consistency issues, it can complicate the entire procedure. Expired or improperly stored glue often turns stringy and gooey, leading to poor retention and application problems. Let's dive into why this happens and how lash technicians can avoid these issues.
Stringy glue refers to a noticeable change in the texture of your lash adhesive. If the glue thickens and leaves a string or blob when you pull the extension away from the glue dot, something is seriously wrong with the adhesive. Like other beauty products, lash adhesives have a shelf life, and once expired, their consistency changesโsimilar to milk turning lumpy when it spoils.
If youโre thinking, โBut itโs still attaching the extension to the natural lash,โ STOP! Not only is this unprofessional, but it also poses significant risks to your clients.
When your lash glue becomes stringy, itโs a clear sign that the adhesive has started to degrade, typically because itโs expired. This thick, sticky consistency makes it difficult to work with and compromises the quality of your application. If you notice these changes, discard the glue immediately.
That said, itโs common for lash glue to become stringy after about 15 minutes of exposure, particularly if you're using a jade stone for your glue dots. In these cases, simply replace the glue dot with a fresh one to continue working smoothly.
Absolutely! Stringy or expired glue not only impacts lash retention but also poses a serious safety risk. As glue breaks down, its chemical structure changes, often releasing more potent fumes. This increases the likelihood of chemical burns or irritation for your clients, especially in sensitive areas around the eyes.
Although you can't extend the shelf life of your lash glue, proper storage and usage can help maintain its freshness for longer. Once opened, store your adhesive in an airtight container, away from direct heat, humidity, and sunlight. Keeping the glue in a stable, cool environment prevents moisture from entering the bottle, which can otherwise lead to retention issues during application.
Before each use, itโs essential to "burp" your glue bottle to release trapped air. To do this, hold the bottle upright and gently squeeze until a small drop of glue appears. Wipe away any excess with a lint-free wipe to avoid buildup at the nozzle.
Shaking your glue before every use is also crucial. Thoroughly shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds to mix the adhesive's chemical components. For optimal results, shake the glue side to side rather than up and down.
Finally, using a hygrometer to monitor the room's temperature and humidity can help you maximize your glueโs performance. An environment that's too hot or cold can alter the consistency of the adhesive, negatively impacting both application and retention.
