Lash mapping
Cluster lashes are a type of temporary false eyelash extension that are attached in โclusters.โ Unlike classic and Russian lash extensions, which follow a 1:1 ratio, cluster lashes are attached to multiple natural lashes at once. Previously known as express or party lashes, they are now more accessible for the general public to use at home.
| Method | Who Can Use It | Glue Ingredients | Where to Apply | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strip Lash | Anyone | Rubber Latex, Cellulose Gum | Eyelid | 1 Day |
| Cluster | Anyone | Acrylates Copolymer | Eyelash | 1 Week |
| Extensions | Lash Technician | Cyanoacrylate | Eyelash | 4 – 6 Weeks |
Now that weโre familiar with the different methods of lash extensions, we know that typical extensions like classic, Russian, and hybrids are not damaging to natural lashes when applied properly. Strip lashes, in particular, arenโt on the eye long enough to cause damage, provided they are removed carefully.
The answer is both yes and no.
Yes: If cluster lashes are applied with professional lash adhesive, they can cause significant damage to your natural lashes. This can lead to issues like increased risk of lash mites and inflammation of the eyelid.
No: If cluster lashes are applied using strip lash glue and removed the same day, they wonโt cause any damage since they havenโt been on long enough. Similarly, if applied with โbond and sealโ glue and removed after a day, there should be no damage. However, leaving them on for an extended period (3+ days) can lead to serious issues.
Natural lashes go through a cycle that lasts 6-8 weeks, consisting of three phases:
When cluster lashes are attached to a group of natural lashes at different stages of their cycle, they can hinder growth. For instance, if an anagen lash is stuck to a cluster lash, the cluster may pull it out instead of allowing it to grow naturally. Over time, this can cause considerable damage and even lead to traction alopecia, a more permanent type of hair loss.
Allowing natural lashes to complete their cycle without being prematurely shed (e.g., picked or pulled) is crucial for optimal lash health. The application of cluster lashes can result in excess adhesive around the eyelid line, which can clog pores and lead to contact dermatitis or infection if left on for too long.
What are my thoughts on cluster lashes? Surprisingly, I think they are a great alternative to strip lashes. While strip lashes can look amazing, they arenโt as seamless as cluster lashes can be. I appreciate that cluster lashes can provide a salon-quality Russian lash look at home without taking hours to apply.
However, I strongly advise against using them for prolonged periods. For a day or night occasion, they are fine, but for anything longer than three days, it's a no from me.
