Can I Use a Sunbed After Getting My Lashes Done?

Thinking about hitting the sunbed after your lash appointment? Here's everything you need to know before you do!

You've just had your lashes freshly done, and what's the first thing you want to do afterward to give yourself the ultimate glow-up treat? A cheeky sunbed. I know how tempting it is and how great it feels!

If you're unfamiliar with how sunbeds work, they provide that ultimate holiday glow and sunkissed look by using UV rays. Sunbeds have become increasingly popular in the beauty communityโ€”many salons now offer them as a convenient way to get a beautiful tan without the hassle of fake tanning or the expense of flying to the Maldives (although, how lovely would that be?).

However, if you've just had your lashes done, you might be wondering: Can using a sunbed cause problems with my lash extensions?

What Are Lash Extensions Made Of?

Eyelash extensions are typically made from either organic or synthetic materials. At Kliko, we use synthetic lashes. While organic lashes were once the more luxurious option, they've fallen out of favour due to their high cost and lack of significant benefits in terms of finish and ease of use.

Synthetic lashes are made from PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), a form of plastic that's highly regarded for its flexibility and quality. This material holds the shape of a lash and mimics the look of a natural lash but with added volume and colour.

But as we all know, when plastics are exposed to heat, they can melt or lose their shapeโ€”this includes PBT. While UV rays can tan your skin, heat is what mostly affects lash extensions. Low levels of heat may cause the extensions to lose their curl or become misshapen, while higher levels of heat can melt the lashes, leaving them "singed." Although we can fix this by removing and replacing the extensions, heat damage can sometimes harm your natural lashes as well.

Potential Problems Sunbeds Can Cause for Lash Extensions

  1. Heat and Moisture
The warmth and moisture generated by sunbeds can gradually weaken the bond between your natural lashes and the extensions. Lash glue (like most adhesives) behaves differently in varying temperatures. Even after curing, the glue can lose its strength in warmer, more humid environments, resulting in poor retention over time.
  2. UV Exposure
The UV radiation from sunbeds can cause the color of your lash extensions to fade gradually. This not only affects the look of your lashes but can also make them appear less seamless. Interestingly, this may be why your lashes often look darker and fluffier right after a lash fill.
  3. Lash Dryness
Exposing both your extensions and natural lashes to heat and UV rays can dry them out, making them brittle. Brittle lashes are more prone to breakage, which can cause your extensions to fall off prematurely.
  4. Change in Colour
The UV bulbs in sunbeds can cause the color of your extensions to fade over time. As a result, your lashes may not look as dark, affecting their overall appearance.
  5. Eye Irritation and Soreness
A common side effect of using sunbeds is eye dryness, which can cause irritation. If your eyes feel dry, you may instinctively rub them, which can cause the extensions to shed more quickly.

So, Can I Use a Sunbed After Getting My Lashes Done?

For all the reasons we've discussed above, we strongly advise against using a sunbed after getting lash extensions.

While we understand that sunbeds might be a part of your weekly routine, itโ€™s important to recognise the potential damage they can cause. Not only will using sunbeds affect your lash extensions by weakening their bond and fading their colour, but it can also dehydrate and damage your natural lashes, making them brittle.

Tips to Protect Your Lash Extensions During Indoor Tanning

If you canโ€™t avoid the sunbed, there are ways to protect your lashes:
  • Wait 48 hours after your lash appointment before using a sunbed.
  • Use sunbed goggles to create a barrier.
  • Drape a towel or cloth over your face for extra protection.
  • Cleanse your lashes after using a sunbed.
  • Be cautious of other heat sources like saunas and steam rooms.
